Vagifem (estradiol) is a female hormone medication that is prescribed to treat vaginal menopause symptoms which may include painful sexual intercourse, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching or burning. These symptoms are caused by your body producing less of the female hormone estrogen which regulates many body processes.

• Vagifem is estradiol tablets and is preloaded into individual applicators.
• Follow your doctor’s directions for how and when to take Vagifem. It is typically taken daily for the initial two weeks of treatment and then taken twice a week.
• Insert the Vagifem applicator into your vagina gently. Press down on the plunger to release the medication.
• If a tablet falls out of the applicator before it is inserted, discard it and use a new applicator.
• Vagifem should be used regularly to be most effective.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of uterus problems, vaginal bleeding, heart disease, heart attack, kidney disease, liver disease, cancer, seizures, migraines, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, blood clotting disorders, stroke, obesity, lupus, an underactive thyroid, obesity, porphyria, mental or mood disorders, mineral imbalance, hypoparathyroidism, gallbladder disease or high cholesterol levels.
• Your family and personal history of blood clots, cancer, angioedema or breast lumps.
• If you have recently had surgery or will be having surgery as this may increase the chance of blood clots. You may need to temporarily stop taking Vagifem.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Smoking and using tobacco while using Vagifem further increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and high blood pressure. This is even more likely if you are over 35. Do not smoke or use tobacco products while you are using Vagifem.
• Vagifem should not be used during pregnancy.
• You should have regular breast exams and gynecology check-ups while taking Vagifem.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Vagifem.

Common side effects of Vagifem:

• Breast tenderness.
• Weight changes.
• Bloating.
• Headaches.
• Diarrhea.
• Nausea or vomiting.

If you have any of the following estradiol side effects, seek medical help:

• New or increased vaginal itching, discharge, odor bleeding or irritation.
• Unusual vaginal bleeding including spotting, breakthrough bleeding, prolonged or recurrent bleeding.
• Persistent vomiting or nausea.
• Mental or mood changes including memory loss or depression.
• Breast lumps.
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain.
• Increased thirst or urination.
• Swelling of the hands or feet.
• Dark urine.
• Jaundice.
• Serious problems from blood clot such as vision changes, confusion, sudden dizziness, fainting, unusual sweating, slurred speech, sudden or severe headache, coughing up blood, weakness or numbness in your arms or legs, breathing problems, pain in your chest, jaw or left arm, weakness on one side of the body, tingling or pain, redness or swelling of the legs.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.
