Nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that is used to treat stomach acid and esophagus conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Nexium relieves symptoms including heartburn, persistent cough and difficulty swallowing by decreasing the amount of acid which is produced by the stomach.

Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Nexium should be taken an hour before a meal.
• Take esomeprazole with a full glass of water.
• Swallow Nexium whole without chewing or crushing tablets.
• If you struggle to swallow Nexium whole, the contents of capsules may be sprinkled onto pudding or applesauce.
• Take esomeprazole for the full amount of time prescribed even if your symptoms have improved.
• Nexium is typically taken for between four and eight weeks. Your doctor may then recommend further treatment.
• Tell your doctor if your conditions persist or worsen.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of liver disease, osteoporosis, autoimmune disease, systemic lupus, or low levels of magnesium in your blood.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Nexium may affect medical test results. Tell all of your medical care providers that you use this medication.
• You may be more likely to break a bone if you take Nexium more than once a day or for an extended period of time.

Common side effects of Nexium:

• Abdominal pain.
• Headache.

If you have any of the following esomeprazole side effects, seek medical help:

• Persistent diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain or cramping or blood or mucus in your stool. Do not take anti-diarrhea or opioid medications if these symptoms occur.
• Low magnesium level symptoms including seizures, persistent muscle spasms or an irregular, slow or fast heartbeat.
• Lupus symptoms including a rash on the cheeks or nose or worsening joint pain.
• Vitamin B-12 deficiency symptoms including weakness, sore tongue or a numbness in the hands or feet. The risk of this is increased if you have been taking esomeprazole or other proton pump inhibitor for 3 years or longer.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Nexium?

If you miss a dose of Nexium, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
